Carlos Sainz did not start the race in Qatar due to a leak in the fuel system. At the FIA press conference in Austin, the Ferrari driver explained what it was like watching the race from the sidelines and what the team has done to avoid similar problems in the future.
Carlos Sainz: “I also had to recover after the Qatar stage, but not physically, but mentally. I couldn’t start, which was unpleasant, but on the other hand, given how events developed, if I had missed a race it would have been better to miss the race in Qatar.
Then I went to New York, where I stayed for a few days. I’ve been traveling the world for nine years, but believe it or not, I’ve never been to this city. Yes, there are traffic jams in New York, but I liked the local restaurants and Central Park. I’m now in Austin and ready to focus on my work. Hopefully I’ll be back on the podium this weekend.
During the race in Qatar I was an interested spectator. I looked at the strategy, the work of the team and thought about what I could do if I took part in the race. From a driver’s point of view, it’s unpleasant to watch the race from the sidelines, but sometimes it happens. It looks like it’s going to be hot in Austin too, I love the track and the atmosphere the fans create. I hope I forget Qatar soon.
I’m not worried that the reliability problems will repeat themselves this weekend. We have replaced many parts in the car to avoid a recurrence of the problems in Qatar. Furthermore, the team is not only looking for a short-term solution, but also a long-term solution to the problem, because it has happened in the past and we are not happy with it. I’ll have to worry about the gas tank, but I hope this won’t be a problem soon.”
