The third meeting of the FIA World Council in 2023 took place in Geneva on Thursday, where decisions were made on several championships held under the auspices of the federation.
There weren’t that many decisions related to Formula 1, but still they exist. In particular, the World Council approved Pirelli as the sole supplier of tires for Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3 for the period from 2025 to 2027.
The World Council approved several additions related to powertrains to the 2026 sporting, technical and financial regulations, and also adopted changes related to fuel supply and development.
The World Council approved changes to the current sporting rules, increasing the number of official tire testing days from 35 to 40.
In addition, a provision was approved to add up to four days of testing, organized by the FIA in consultation with all participants, to facilitate research into methods to reduce splashing in wet weather.
Changes have been made to the International Sports Code. Previously, the maximum amount that competitors could be fined by stewards was 250 thousand euros. This amount has not been revised for 12 years and, as stated in the World Council decision, “does not reflect the current needs of motorsport.”
The World Council has increased the maximum fine in Formula 1 to one million euros, for all other FIA world championships to 750 thousand euros, and for all other FIA racing series to 500 thousand euros.
In his opening speech, FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem mentioned the approval of Andretti’s Formula 1 bid and reiterated that the emergence of a new team will benefit the championship: “We recently announced the approval of Andretti Formula Racing’s bid after a thorough evaluation.
I would like to thank the members of the FIA team for their support in this process and congratulate them on the work they have done. We are confident that we are doing everything we can to ensure the long-term sustainability of the sport.”
The FIA press release also quotes Formula 1 President Stefano Domenicali on Michael Andretti’s bid: “The 2023 season has once again proven to be a fantastic season for our sport, and for that we thank the FIA, Formula 1 , the teams, promoters and partners. . We continue to work closely with the FIA to stay focused on the issues that matter to the sport and build on the momentum we have.
We note the FIA’s comments regarding the process for introducing a new team into the championship. As we said previously, we will now conduct our own assessment of the merits of the application.
We look forward to the remaining races in 2023 and next season.”
