The round in Austin was the twelfth of the season in which Alfa Romeo did not earn any points: Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou finished fourteenth and fifteenth respectively. Both team riders attributed these results to a lack of long-distance speed.
Valtteri Bottas (14th): “We lacked pace in the race – the finishing positions reflect our form at the moment. In terms of strategy, we did everything right and chose the right tires, but the car just wasn’t fast enough this weekend.
I hope we find a solution and improve it next weekend. Last year the Mexican circuit suited us well, and I hope it will be the same this year in the next stage. In Austin we had to make some compromises in the settings because of the bumps on the track.”
Guanyu Zhou (15th): “A very difficult race. Overall we missed the pace this weekend. The first few laps in the first stint were good, but then we switched to hard tires. I think we made the pit stop earlier than necessary. On hard tires the car simply had no speed.
I don’t think the result would have been different if we had chosen a different strategy – the car simply didn’t have enough speed. This made the race difficult. We need to find out what is causing the lack of pace this weekend.”
