The race in Austin was the first after the summer break in which Lance Stroll earned points and finished ninth. His teammate Fernando Alonso retired due to a damaged underside of the AMR23. After the results of the American Grand Prix, the Aston Martin team dropped to fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship, behind McLaren.
Lance walk (9th): “Ninth place at the finish after starting from the pit lane is a positive result after some difficult days on the COTA circuit. It’s great to earn points after a few tough races.
Before the start we changed the car settings, which was a step in the right direction: I was more competitive in the race. The car held the line well in the corners, especially on the Medium tires, and I made several overtakes in Turn 12. We will continue to work hard to keep the momentum going for the next round in Mexico City.”
Fernando Alonso (departure): “The AMR23 had a high pace in the race, which allowed me to make up for this. Everything went so far that I was going to earn points after starting from the pit lane, but unfortunately I had to stop due to damage to the car. Too bad, because we were competitive in the race.
The team gathered a lot of useful information as our cars were in different configurations during the race. This information will be crucial in the remaining races.”
Mike Krak, Team Principal: “The two points Lance scored were a good result considering how the weekend went and both cars started from the pit lane. Lance drove a good race, controlled his tire wear, set competitive times and overtook.
Fernando should also have earned points, but dropped out seven laps before the finish due to a damaged underbody. We have collected useful information about the updated car that will help in the upcoming races. The team is looking forward to returning to the track next weekend in Mexico.”
