The organizers of the World Electric Car Racing Championship have unveiled the city circuit in Tokyo, which will host a Formula E race for the first time in March next year.
The race, traditionally called the Tokyo E-Prix, will take place on a 2,582-long street circuit with a very complex configuration, which has 18 corners, most of them 90 degrees. The route runs around Japan’s largest Tokyo International Expo Center and is very close to the city center.
There are three more or less long straights, and passing through rather complex combinations of turns requires the racers to have sophisticated steering techniques. The advantages of the circuit include the fact that the races on it take place against the backdrop of impressive views of the Japanese capital.
Formula E specialists responsible for designing the circuits are confident that the drivers will have to solve difficult problems on the Tokyo ring and that spectators will see exciting racing. The paddock and box complex will be located on the waterfront of Tokyo Bay.
The organizers of the Tokyo E-Prix expect the Formula E race to contribute to the wider adoption of electric vehicles in the Japanese capital. Incidentally, the streets in Tokyo are closed to traffic for the first time.
Alberto Longo, co-founder and CEO of Formula E: “We are pleased to present the circuit where the debut race in Tokyo will take place, and we are confident that the 22 Formula E drivers will have to solve unique challenges there, but at the same time they will be able to demonstrate all their skills, and Japanese fans will have an unforgettable experience.
Formula E will be the first championship to take place on the streets of Tokyo and we are honored to do this.”
It is also worth adding that the Tokyo circuit has not yet received official FIA homologation.
