On the opening lap of the British Grand Prix there were two serious incidents – a huge crash in the first corner and an unauthorized entry to the track by Just Stop Oil climate activists dressed in the colors of marshals and climbed over the barrier on the Wellington Straight.
Northamptonshire Police, who warned organizers of a possible protest on Friday, confirmed the arrest of seven people.
After the race, Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali spoke on Sky Sport F1 sharply criticizing the incident, which was not televised but did not go unnoticed.
Stefano Domenicali: “Everyone has the right to speak out on certain issues, but no one has the right to endanger other people’s lives. The actions of a small group of individuals were irresponsible and dangerous.
We thank the police for their excellent work, but we understand the risk to the safety of riders, marshals, fans and the activists themselves.”
At a press conference after the race, Lewis Hamilton supported the activists, saying: “I love that people are fighting for the planet, we need more people like that.”
The team had to apologize: “Lewis supported the right to protest, but not the method they chose, which endangered their safety and that of others”
Lewis later clarified his stance on social networks: “Please don’t go to our racetracks to voice your protest, we don’t want to endanger you.”
