In Austin, Lewis Hamilton had a fighting race and finished second, but was disqualified because the wear on the control rod exceeded 1 mm. The Brit believes that it was not just two cars that should have been disqualified.
Lewis Hamilton: “We had a sprint weekend for the first time on Saturday in Austin, after the race on Sunday they checked four cars and disqualified 50%. Naturally, there were many more cars that did not comply with the regulations.
I heard from various sources that many cars had this problem, but they were simply not checked. I have been racing for 16 years, there have been many situations like this where some people get away with it, while others are just unlucky enough to be checked.
The rules for sprint weekends need to be adjusted, some kind of better structure needs to be created that guarantees fairness and equal conditions for everyone.
We have never had such problems in Austin, but this time there was a sprint on Saturday during the weekend. The reason is that we could not optimally adjust the car on Friday, and then it was in a closed park and we could not change anything. We need to develop a different approach for these types of weekends, especially on such bumpy tracks.
This is the only reason for disqualification. Simply because the track is rough and some cars handle it better than others. Look at the footage, how Charles and I bobbed our heads – it speaks volumes about the car’s behavior.”
