Nico Hulkenberg will hold his 200th race in Formula 1 in Mexico City. At the same time, the Haas driver holds the dubious record of having the most starts without finishing on the podium. At the FIA press conference, the Haas driver was asked what was the cause of such disappointing statistics.
Nico Hulkenberg: “Formula 1 is much more difficult than the youth series! I’ve only had a few races where I was able to finish on the podium, even though I wasn’t driving the best car at the time. Every time something bothers me, but it happens. If you don’t have one of the leading cars, opportunities like this don’t come around often. I guess I just missed something.”
A week ago the Haas team brought a refreshed car to Austin, but judging by the weekend’s results, the new products weren’t as effective as you might expect. However, Nico praised the updates: “The sprint format weekend was not the most successful for us, so it was decided to radically change the settings before the race and start from the pit lane. It made life a little more difficult, but it was the right decision because we were more competitive on Sunday.
For the first time we saw positive signals, and from a tire point of view the last race was one of our best in a long time. We continue to evaluate new products, learn something new about them, and I think we will be able to get more out of them over time. I’m positive.”
