Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes that only the appearance of the safety car on lap 39 of the British Grand Prix prevented Lewis Hamilton from fighting for the win. But overall, the team is happy with the pace the car was capable of last weekend.
Toto Wolff: “We were very happy with the speed the car was capable of, we even fought for the win in the race, this is an encouraging sign. Importantly, the build-up practically did not appear, the behavior of the W13 was quite good both on hard tires and on the medium compound rubber, and only on the soft tires there was a little lack of grip, which we expected at the end from the distance.
Lewis did a great job with the Medium tires and without the safety car I don’t rule out that he could have won the race. But most importantly, our car allowed us to fight for the win, and I like this the most.
Talking about the tasks for the rest of the season, I think now we want to win races at the expense of our own speed, be stable in the leading group, fight against them and also develop a car for next year. .
I think next weekend it will be more difficult for us, on the Austrian track we always had problems, because there are corners, for example 3rd and 4th, which our cars don’t like, but on high speed sections of the circle everything should be fine. In France, at the Circuit Paul Ricard, we also have to look good, although it must be emphasized that we have to keep working with the car to finally address its weaknesses.
