Verstappen: The weekend started better than I expected

Max Verstappen was fastest during both Friday training sessions on the Mexican circuit and said the weekend had started better than he expected. His Mexican teammate at Red Bull Racing, Sergio Perez, finished fifth.

Max Verstappen (1st): “There are always points where improvements are needed. But I think overall the weekend started well, probably even better than I expected, which is always positive.

The track is very slippery, but that is always the case here. On long sets of laps it is very difficult to find the optimal approach to the tires, so there are some aspects we need to keep working on.

If we talk about the remaining days of the weekend, tomorrow’s qualifying will be a very intense rivalry. As for the pace throughout the race, it will be a different story.”

Sergio Perez: (5th): “It’s funny that while driving you are so focused that you can forget where you are, but as soon as you step out of the cockpit you immediately see that a lot of attention is focused on you. However, it is very nice that the fans offer such warm support!

I won’t say everything was that simple: we couldn’t really understand the behavior of soft tires in one fast lap. When I was on the track the yellow flags went out so I had to try again.

The second lap I didn’t ride as expected and in the last corner I almost flew off the track! Overall, much remains to be understood; First of all, we need to understand how different tire compounds work to properly prepare for Sunday.

I think overall we are in a favorable position and moving in the right direction. So far everything is going well, but the battle in qualifying promises to be very intense.”
