The entire Alfa Romeo team reached the qualifying final in Mexico City, but Valteri Bottas’ best result was ninth place. After the session, the Finn said he had hoped to take a higher starting position.
His partner Guanyu Zhou made only one attempt in the final and set the tenth fastest time.
Valtteri Bottas (9th): “I was hoping for a better result, but apparently this is the speed of our car at the moment. In any case, we reached the final with two cars, which can be considered a very good result for the team. I accept these basic positions.
I think our race pace compared to the others is the same as our qualifying pace. This gives me the confidence that I can earn points in the race. However, for this you have to do everything perfectly. I’m looking forward to getting started.”
Guanyu Zhou (10th): “I’m happy to be in the qualifying final again. At first I was a bit upset that I hadn’t made it to the final, but then I was told that I had made it. Today luck was on our side, but I did everything right when necessary.
I’m comfortable in the car and happy with my laps, but it was clearly difficult to expect more today.
I hope we will earn points with two cars in the race. This weekend we are in a more comfortable position, which gives the team hope. It’s a long race – 71 laps – a lot can happen, so we have to stay calm and earn points.”
