Kevin Magnussen crashed his car during a race in Mexico City due to a broken suspension. The Haas driver said his hands were sore after hitting the wall, but he was otherwise fine.
His teammate Nico Hulkenberg completed his 200th career race. Nico had a good chance to get points, but fell out of the top ten shortly before the finish after a long battle with Esteban Ocon.
Nico Hulkenberg (13th): “The tires simply lost their efficiency. It was clear that completing 37 laps on one Medium set was not going to be easy. Unfortunately we were already using hard tires according to the one-stop strategy and had no way of knowing that the race would be stopped by red flags. But what’s more important is that Kevin is doing well.
I’m sure I annoyed my rivals who leaned against my rear wing for a long time, but I’m happy with it.”
Kevin Magnussen (departure): “I crashed the car because of a broken left rear suspension. It happened in the wrong place, so I hit the wall. I hit my hands, they hurt a little, but other than that I’m fine.
It is necessary to find out the cause of the malfunction, since so far there were no signs. I was stuck in traffic for a long time and the tires overheated, but I don’t know if that had any effect on the alignment.”
Gunther Steinerteam leader: “We need to determine the cause of the suspension failure of Kevin’s car, but apparently the failure is related to the heat.
Another difficult day, but not everything was bad. Nico was in the race for the points, but then the red flags appeared and the tires became ineffective in the final stint. Our car’s tires cannot travel the same distance as those of our rivals’ cars. We were able to fight almost the entire distance, but not nearly enough.
Otherwise the team did well and Nico drove fantastic and tried to do something.”
