Lewis Hamilton admitted after qualifying that he expected to fight for a better result than 5th on the home track at Silverstone, but promised to do everything he could to recoup the race.
Lewis Hamilton (5th): “I don’t know who said we can excel at Silverstone, but I know that the whole team has worked very hard to prepare the car, and we have brought some new products here, although this is not a huge update .
But at least we made improvements, somewhat narrowing the gap with the leaders. We wouldn’t have had good results on a dry track, but qualifying was held in the rain and today we had some chances. Under these conditions, the speeds are lower, so that the build-up is less pronounced.
Talking about the race, in yesterday’s practice our pace on long series of circles was better than on short ones, although the car still doesn’t handle slow corners well. It will not be easy to get a high result from fifth position, but I will try to break through, especially because the fans support us so well.
To be honest, today I expected to battle the first three positions and thought I could show the second result, but I only finished fifth. This complicates the task for tomorrow, but we will still do our best.”
George Russell (8th): “During qualifying, the situation gradually deteriorated. In the first session I was confident and consistently finished in the top three, and in the final, when it mattered, I couldn’t reach the max.
Today the car allowed me to put in fourth or fifth, but at the key moment I made a mistake on a fast lap.
