Athletistic will broadcast a live online text broadcast: Formula 1. British Grand Prix. Qualification. Direct
The British round is consistently one of the highlights of the F1 calendar. It’s a combination of Silverstone’s history, the racing knowledge and culture of the fans, the unpredictable weather conditions and the fact that many teams are based nearby.
Silverstone hosted the very first Formula 1 race in 1950, and although responsibility for the British Grand Prix was later shared with Aintree and Brands Hatch, Silverstone remains the official venue for the race today. The layout of the course has been constantly revised since the first race, with the most significant change occurring in 2010 when the old perimeter layout was altered to create a new infield.
The current 5.89km circuit consists of high-speed tight corners and fast straights, making it one of the fastest on the calendar and a popular destination for racers. As a result, teams strive to minimize resistance as much as possible. For this reason, we will see the same wing settings as in the stages in Azerbaijan and Canada.
Silverstone is also one of the circuits where the tires are the most demanding in terms of energy consumption. Pirelli has therefore chosen the most durable tires in the range: C1 – hard white, C2 – medium yellow and C3 – soft red. This is the third time this combination has been chosen this season.
Last year’s race was won by two tire changes, one of which came early in the red flag period after a collision between Mercedes-Benz AMG’s Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen.
As already mentioned, the weather can also be quite changeable. According to the weather forecast, it could rain in Saturday’s qualifying, but Sunday’s race should remain dry.
Going into the weekend, Verstappen leads the 2022 league with 175 points. Red Bull co-driver Sergio Perez is second with 129 points and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is third with 126 points. Red Bull leads the constructors’ championship with 304 points against 228 for Ferrari and 188 for Mercedes. Hamilton won the British Grand Prix last year for Mercedes.
