Super formula: Liam Lawson named Rookie of the Year

Liam Lawson had a great season in the Japanese Super Formula series and was named Rookie of the Year.

The New Zealand racer became vice-champion, but fought for the title to the last, and obviously his performance – three wins and pole position – should have received a worthy assessment.

“I think it’s been an incredibly good year, even though it’s been a very difficult season,” Lawson said. “My good friend Nick Cassidy, who raced in Super Formula in the past, always said to me: “It takes time to get good results in this series, but you try!”

I was prepared for difficulties, but looking back I am willing to repeat: the season was very good. It’s a shame we didn’t win the championship, but I think Ritomo Miata (2023 Super Formula champion) has been consistent and very good all year.

The year in the Japanese series taught me a lot, influenced me enormously and brought me many advantages in preparing for Formula 1.”

It was no coincidence that Liam mentioned Nick Cassidy: his compatriot won the title in Super Formula in 2019 and is now successfully continuing his career in Formula E. But there were other European drivers who managed to achieve success in this prestigious Japanese championship , here are just a few names: Ralph Schumacher (1996), Pedro de la Rosa (1997), Ralph Fuhrman (2002), Loïc Duval (2009) and André Lotterer (2011).
