The Mercedes team effectively rehabilitated itself after the disqualification that befell it in the previous stage in Austin. In Mexico City, Lewis Hamilton drove an attacking race and finished second again, proving that he and his car are second only to Max Verstappen and Red Bull in terms of speed.
Toto Wolff, the head of the factory team of the Stuttgart group, was of course very happy with this.
Toto Wolff: “We have a satisfied smile on our faces because our car turned out to be so fast. When the track was clear for Lewis, he was able to drive much faster than his pursuers on the Medium tires. He completed laps with good results and at the end of the race he also recorded the best lap.
Several weekends in a row we said to ourselves, “There were opportunities for success, but we couldn’t take them.” I think we need to improve our qualifications. We probably cannot yet compare with Max Verstappen in terms of maximum speed on the straights, but it is clear that our pace is good.
Lewis had a great race. Unfortunately, there is no stability in the results yet and sometimes we just don’t know if the tire life will be enough for us. As soon as the track temperature changes just a few degrees, it immediately affects the pace.”
