Sergio Perez desperately wanted to excel at his home Grand Prix, but retired just moments after the start after an incident in the first corner. There was hard contact between his car and Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari and the RB19’s rear suspension was broken.
Sergio Perez: “I had a great start and saw an opening on the track… To be honest, I would have been disappointed if I had been on the podium today but not taken the opportunity to take the lead, so I had to try it.
I tried, but I didn’t expect Charles to behave like that, he was in the middle and had less room to maneuver and couldn’t brake as late as Max and I.
I think there simply wasn’t room on the track for three cars, it was a pure racing incident. I don’t know what I should have done? I shouldn’t have said this, but maybe if I had gone slower, everything would have been fine. But then you’d better go home straight away instead of chasing.
I am a racing driver and I especially wanted to perform well at my home Grand Prix, especially because I have been on the podium here for the past two seasons and today I put everything on the line. And I’m very angry about how it ended…”
