At Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton finished third, led the race, set the fastest lap and was seriously in the running for the win for the first time of the season. After the finish, the Mercedes driver commented that the speed of the W13 car was encouraging, but it was too early to count on any wins.
Q: Lewis, this is your thirteenth podium finish at Silverstone. Tell me about the battle in the final rounds? Did you enjoy fighting your opponents?
Lewis Hamilton: Surely! Such a struggle reminded me of the time when I was karting. We saw Formula 1 at its best. The fact that we can closely follow and fight the adversary speaks of the correctness of the direction we are now following. I am very happy that I was able to participate as I have not participated in this in a very long time.
Q: How do you rate the speed of the W13? Has the car’s pace encouraged the team this weekend?
Lewis Hamilton: In my opinion, the pace is very encouraging, because we participated in the battle. Sometimes I drove as fast as a Ferrari, and sometimes even faster. At the end of the race I showed the best lap. I don’t think we were able to do that earlier this season.
The team brought innovations this weekend, which allowed the pace to be increased. This year our car was not that fast, so we were able to catch up a bit. However, I don’t think we’re in a position to fight for wins right now, but we’re not far from it.
Q: You said you were sometimes faster than the Ferrari drivers. If the safety car hadn’t come on track, could you have driven for them?
Lewis Hamilton: I did everything in my power, and even at some point I started to hope … At some point my speed started to increase, the tires got better and I gradually started to catch up. I suppose if the safety car hadn’t been there I could have struggled in the last laps, but this didn’t happen.
Q: Lewis, for the first time in your career you didn’t win one of the first ten races of the season, but you were leading at Silverstone. Has that leadership given you the spark you need this year?
Lewis Hamilton: I don’t feel any strange feelings because of such statistics. My career has been going on for many years, and there have certainly been periods where I have not won for a long time.
As for the spark… The progress we’ve made over the past few races gives us more and more hope. The machine has potential, so we have to keep working, with due care, stay focused and not give up.
