At Silverstone, both Haas F1 drivers earned points and for Mick Schumacher it was the first finish in the top ten. Team boss Günther Steiner expects the German driver to be able to perform consistently at this level.
Q: After the finish of the British Grand Prix the atmosphere in the pits of the team was just festive, this is a really important result for you guys…
Gunther Steiner: Of course our team needed him more than anyone else, because we were often close to the top ten, but in the last five races it was not possible to earn points. So now, of course, we can breathe easier.
After qualifying, the weekend didn’t seem to be going well for us, but on Sunday the car was fast and we were able to fight for positions. It’s good that Mick has earned points as the events on the track have developed in an incredible way, but I hope he will no longer experience such a heavy pressure and will now drive calmer and more freely.
Q: What did you do to see him fight Verstappen in the closing laps of the race? They banged on the table, yelled – what was your reaction?
Gunther Steiner: I just hoped this wouldn’t get in the way as we’ve been unlucky lately. The battle was wheel to wheel, they allowed each other a minimum of space on the track and then it was still waiting for the decision of the stewards. It’s not that the riders allowed wrong actions during the fight, but I saw a message on the technical monitor that the stewards were investigating if one of them was pushing the opponent’s car out of the track.
Q: Obviously the first points earned is a very important achievement for Mick as this is his second season in Formula 1. Do you think we can now expect him to perform consistently at this level?
Gunther Steiner: Yes I hope so. Most importantly, Mick was confident in his abilities, although you have to be careful with predictions and try not to let the pressure grow again. But I agree, now it is necessary to earn points in every race, and when he fails at some point it will be necessary not to blame him.
Of course it’s hard to influence how other people see it, but now the most important thing for Mick is to keep calm, keep working, and success will come. And what is happening in the outside world, it is better not to pay attention to that at all.
