The sixth and final race weekend of the season will be held in Sao Paulo in a sprint format. Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz believes Formula 1 should continue to experiment with different sprint formats and find an option where Saturday’s start does not influence Sunday’s race as much as it does now.
Carlos Sainz: “I agree that six sprints per season is enough. But at the same time I agree with those who say that Saturday’s sprint has a strong influence on Sunday’s race. In fact, the sprint has become the first stint of the main race and that doesn’t help.
I believe that the most important event should be the race on Sunday: the Grand Prix. And if we agree with that, we should try to make a change for the better on Saturday.
Should we try a reverse grid or a one-lap qualifying? Don’t know. But I think the current sprint format is in a way an experiment being carried out in Formula 1. I suggest continuing to experiment to understand which format is best.
In my opinion, Saturday in the current format is not entirely suitable for Sunday’s race.”
