In the sprint at Interlagos, Alex Albon gained rear positions compared to the start and finished fifteenth. The Williams driver complained about the severe degradation of the Soft tires, which noticeably affected the speed and behavior of the car.
His teammate Logan Sargent ran the sprint on Medium tires and finished last. The American racer explained the result as being stuck in traffic and not wanting to risk a collision.
Alex Albon (15th): “Not a bad sprint, although I had a hard time at the end of the peloton. I had a good pace, but the degradation of most tires was very strong, so to be honest the car drove terribly.
It’s strange that the degradation is so strong. There were even thoughts of switching to hard tires, but this compound works very poorly on this track. Only Soft offers sufficient grip here.
I think we will see interesting strategies in the race, but in the end everything will depend on the degradation of the rubber. I hope we’re doing well.”
Logan Sargent (20th): “In a sprint you take everything you can. We have received information that may help with the race. I couldn’t risk the car as the main start was coming up on Sunday, so I had to go with the “DRS train”, which is a shame. If I had driven on an empty track I would have shown a higher pace.
Alex was able to progress and that is positive. I think if the cars had been spread out, and not in a ‘DRS train’, I would have gained back positions too. You have to try to find opportunities to overtake in the race to move forward.
The weekend won’t be easy for us, but cool weather is expected on Sunday, which should suit us well. I believe our car has a speed advantage over competitors starting at the front, and we will have 71 laps to exploit this advantage.”
