Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg started the sprint on Medium tires hoping that this compound would provide an advantage closer to the finish, but the calculation did not work out. The Haas drivers lost ground from the start and saw the checkered flag in sixteenth and eighteenth place.
Kevin Magnussen (16th): “We thought that if we did the sprint on the same tires as the others, we wouldn’t get into the top eight. We wanted to earn points and took a big risk, but I didn’t expect that everyone else, except one Williams driver, would opt for soft tyres.
We tried an alternative in an attempt to score points. We cannot change the car’s settings, but at least we discovered the car’s behavior on medium tires and assessed the speed of the others on soft tires.”
Nico Hulkenberg (18th): “I don’t think it mattered which tires we started on, because our speed was very low anyway. We lack downforce compared to the others and we pay for that.
The prospects for the race do not look particularly attractive, as we cannot change the car’s settings when the park is closed. The forecast for the race is not the most favorable.”
Gunther Steiner, team leader: “Very disappointing result. We started eleventh and twelfth and ended up where we left off. We are unable to control the degradation of rubber.
We must continue to work on this, because the situation cannot be corrected without putting in a lot of effort. Sunday is another difficult day.”
