Michael Andretti: We’re considered rednecks

Michael Andretti accused the Formula 1 teams of arrogance and said he and his partners were considered “a couple of rednecks”, but he believes the Andretti Cadillac project will continue despite this attitude.

Andretti’s bid to create a new 11th World Championship team has been approved at FIA level but must be accepted by Formula 1 at the next stage, but this process could be delayed. At the same time, the position of the existing teams is known: the majority do not hide their negative attitude towards the American project.

“We have to realize what we are getting into. We get into a story with a lot of politics and all that stuff. That’s just the way things are,” said Michael Andretti on the Bloomberg Originals video podcast. – And we will have to take all this into account. Although I don’t think it will be that difficult for us to get into Formula 1.

But we will prove our worth and achieve our goal. Let’s start with the fact that they consider us some kind of hillbilly who doesn’t know what he’s doing. But because we have a lot of experience in motorsport, we can approach this project differently, different from all the others, and we can succeed.

It seems to us that if there are more cars in the championship, this will only benefit the sport. Yes, this will take away a certain slice of the overall pie, i.e. prize money and all that, but we believe we can give Formula 1 more than we take away.

The point is that there will be a truly American team with an American driver, whose cars will be made in the USA, and they will be powered by American-built engines. I mean, this is all going to generate a lot of interest in the United States.”

The arguments put forward by Andretti are clear, but the decision remains with Formula 1 management.

“There is a certain procedure and we follow it,” Speedcafe quotes Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula 1. “As always, we should not create expectations. The FIA has fulfilled its role correctly by giving the project an initial assessment, and now our procedure for assessing its commercial and marketing side is underway.

Once this process has been completed, we will of course inform everyone of the results and, first of all, we will share this information with the FIA.”
