WEC: Alpine says goodbye to the LMP2 category

Yesterday the season finale of the endurance race, the Bahrain 8 Hours, took place at the Sakhir circuit. This was the last WEC stage in which sports prototypes from the LMP2 category took part, and next year they will only participate in the Le Mans Marathon. In the World Championship, which takes place under the auspices of the FIA , this class will no longer exist: in the WEC in 2024, only hypercars (LMH/LMDh) and sports cars from the LMGT3 category will remain.

For the last time in the recent history of the WEC, 11 LMP2 cars were at the start, including two Oreca 07 sports prototypes in Alpine Team colours. For the 2024 season, the Renault factory team has built two Alpine A424 hypercars and is currently conducting intensive testing with these cars. We told you that Mick Schumacher gained experience driving such equipment in October.

After the WEC season, Alpine Racing engineers, together with specialists from the French team Signatech, will continue to fine-tune the A424 and prepare the latest hypercar for the homologation procedure.

In the meantime, Alpine said goodbye to the LMP2 category and thanked by name everyone involved in this program – their names are listed on a special poster dedicated to the last WEC race with the participation of these cars.

“Goodbye LMP2! The end of an era has arrived and a new era begins. Hypercar, now we will take care of you!” – this is how Alpine commented on this event.

By the way, the team’s teams did not perform optimally in this race: car No. 36 finished in 7th place in the class, car No. 35 came in tenth.
