Brown: Transitioning to the new regulations was the right step

After the British Grand Prix, Formula 1 sporting director Ross Brawn resumed the practice of writing columns for the championship’s official website. In the final issue, Brown commented on the Silverstone race and the performance of the 2022 cars.

Ross Brawn: “The race at Silverstone in 2022 is already a classic and a perfect demonstration of what the sport has tried to achieve with revolutionary new cars. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that Guanyu Zhou and Alex Albon were okay after such serious accidents. We saw another great example of the progress Formula 1 and the FIA have made in terms of safety.

After we saw a great race. What I particularly liked was the accuracy of controlling the machines. We saw numerous battles over several turns and repeated position changes. We saw that on the new cars the riders could follow different paths so that two, three or even four cars could ride side by side. The quality of overtaking has also improved. Drivers now have to make an effort to get ahead – it’s no longer about passing an opponent using DRS.

We have already seen some exciting battles this year, including wheel-to-wheel repositioning in the battle for the lead in the race between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Drivers love the new generation of cars – they were all positive about the changes and the ability to chase an opponent up close. Many riders added that chasing does not always lead to overtaking, but it does increase the pressure on the opponent and the chance of his mistake.

I don’t think there is at least one rider who did not recognize the improvements or was dissatisfied with the changes. In addition, the cars allow much more stable laps this year than in previous seasons.

All this shows that the direction Formula 1 and the FIA have taken has proved absolutely correct, and we can be sure that such an approach is absolutely necessary for our future.

We see a new approach to the creation of regulations. Now we take into account not only speed or cost, but also characteristics of cars that make interesting races possible. This factor will now always be taken into account when developing new Formula 1 cars – we have never seen anything like it before. We remember developing cars for racing.

It’s nice to see teams and the sport in general dealing with the problem of building cars. At Silverstone, the teams have handled this phenomenon better and the FIA continues to work to completely eliminate this effect.
