The Sao Paulo Grand Prix ended with a double retirement for Alfa Romeo. The team did not mention the reasons for the retirements of Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou, but noted that these were two unrelated issues, and that both drivers retired to avoid further damage to the car.
Valtteri Bottas (retreat): “Today we had a good pace – clear progress compared to the previous days of the weekend. We adapted well to the cooler weather and fought for the points.
After the collision at the start I managed to avoid all the debris in the first corner, but then unfortunately I had to get out. We have to find out the cause of the technical malfunction, but it remains a shame. It’s a shame, because there was a chance to achieve a promising result.
Overall, the weekend turned out to be difficult for us. There are still two stages to go before the end of the season and our prospects look quite difficult. However, we are not giving up and will continue to work hard to regain the positions we lost in the last two races.”
Guanyu Zhou (departure): “With two cars we had a good chance to earn points. Valtteri and I worked together to finish in the top ten, so it’s a shame the race ended like this. We had a good pace and made progress, but technical problems forced us to stop.
I don’t know the details – we just need to find out the cause of the problem, but I had to stop the car to avoid more serious consequences. It’s a shame, but that’s racing.
Now we have to concentrate on the stage in Las Vegas. We have to keep working to be as competitive as we were during the race in Sao Paulo.”
