Fernando Alonso: We’ll fight until the last lap!

Fernando Alonso finished third in Sao Paulo and reached the podium for the first time since the Dutch Grand Prix. The Aston Martin driver regained third place on the final lap in the battle against Sergio Perez, beating the Mexican at the finish by just 0.053 seconds. The result allowed the Spanish rider to rise to fourth place in the individual competition.

Alonso’s teammate Lance Stroll confirmed Aston Martin’s pace on the Brazilian circuit, finishing fifth.

Fernando Alonso (3rd): “Sergio pressured me for about 30 laps! When he overtook me with two laps to go, I thought: “Okay, I’ve lost my place, the podium is out of reach.” But then he braked a little too late in Turn 1 and I decided: “Okay, I’ll try to overtake in Turn 4!”

A phenomenal result for the team. We were plagued by problems for several months, especially in the two previous stages, where there were two retirements. This stage is for the team and everyone who works at the grassroots level. We will fight until the last round!”

Lance walk (5th): “None of my starts can be called successful – both times there was serious wheel slip due to the very low grip on the asphalt. As a result I got off to a bad start, but as the race went on the car had speed – we were faster than Ferrari and Mercedes. Apparently we have returned to the positions we took at the beginning of this year. The result gives us confidence that we can fight for points in the last two races of the season.

I want to say hello to the whole team – the last few races have been difficult, but today was a real reward and a reason to smile after three weeks on the road. Now I’m looking forward to the Vegas stage!”
