Magnussen: Mick doesn’t look for excuses and admit mistakes

Despite a year-long hiatus in Formula 1 performance, Kevin Magnussen passed the first races of the season with confidence and is ahead of his partner in the individual standings. The Haas rider thinks highly of Mick Schumacher and is pleased with the way they have built a working relationship.

Kevin Magnussen: “I have more experience than my partner and I try to use that of course. However, the increased number of races does not mean that I have a special status in the team.

Mick has only been in Formula 1 for a year, but he is doing well because he is a smart boy. The team listens to both of us and I try to be as open as possible with Mick. I don’t think I have to hide anything from him. I’m relaxed and if I can help him, I’ll help, because that benefits the whole team, including me.

Mick is very eager to learn and asks a lot of questions. Such open communication between partners is a rarity in Formula 1. Some drivers are too proud to ask, others are unwilling to share information, others are afraid to show weakness. Mika doesn’t care.

I myself am more relaxed than before, and if he is faster than me, then I can also learn something. In this way, both riders move the team forward. Mick never looks for excuses, he is honest with himself and the team, admits mistakes straight away. He has the right attitude and his talent is obvious.

It is not easy for him with such a last name, because Mick’s father is the greatest Formula 1 driver of all time. Some might say that Mick only drives in Formula 1 because his last name is Schumacher, but that’s not true. He won races and titles in Formula 3 and Formula 2. I was only 2nd in Formula 3 myself and some drivers didn’t win Formula 1 titles at all. Mick has his own way.”
