The circuit in Miami was created by the British company Apex Circuit Design and Clive Bowen, the founder and leader, spoke about the features of this project. By the way, we can say that Clive is our old friend, since almost 14 years ago Apex specialists developed a project for a race track in Domodedovo, which was never implemented, but that’s another story.
Miami was luckier, despite all the difficulties, and the debut Grand Prix is scheduled for May 8.
Question: How did you come to choose this profession and make race tracks?
Clive Bowen: 25 years ago I accidentally met a man who had an idea to build an autodrome. He was aware that I knew something about motorsport, that I was an engineer and I knew design and construction. Together with this man we spent four years developing a route project that could become commercially viable, and in 2001 a company in Dubai liked our project.
And three years later, we opened the Dubai Autodrome.
Q: Do you have racing experience?
Clive Bowen: When I was younger I raced. In the late 90s I was involved in karting, competed in the British Championships for two years and when I tried Formula Ford I realized I was too tall and overweight. Besides, I wasn’t very good at it. So instead I started working with young riders and supporting them.
Q: What are the characteristics of the Miami job?
Clive Bowen: We wanted to create something completely unique that can’t be found anywhere else but Miami. We managed to lay the track under the existing funicular – in my opinion I have not seen anything like it on other tracks. Our route goes under the intersection of several highways – this one too is nowhere to be found. We had the opportunity to do some combinations of really fast corners, but there are also slower corners and two very long straights.
When the technical regulations for aerodynamics change, in the first half of the year, team engineers have to solve difficult problems by choosing the optimal settings for new cars, and for motorsport this is an ideal situation.
When we talk about the city, I really like this typical Latin American taste, which can be felt literally everywhere here. Different cultures coexist here, and it’s just great, it’s fun!
