Pirelli tires are often criticized for their high level of degradation, forcing drivers to slow down rather than attack with full force. In response, the Italian company is ready to consider the possibility of creating new tires before 2025 that will be less subject to degradation, but still allow for a variety of strategy options.
“If there is no relegation, there is no reason to have two pit stops in the race,” explains Pirelli race director Mario Isola. “I think a lot of the battle on the track has to do with the degradation of the tires and the way the drivers deal with it.
If we reduce this, there is a risk that all the cars will simply chase each other, because everyone can attack at full strength. There will no longer be a situation where drivers have tires in different conditions. But I completely understand riders who complain about the high level of relegation because they want to attack harder.
We want to understand how to upgrade the tires to make them fight on the track and reduce degradation. To do this we need to develop tires with a different wear level, and we are willing to consider this option.
But it’s important to understand whether this decision has unintended consequences. We have to accept the advice and comments of the riders, but at the same time understand whether it is good for the sport or not.”
