1996 world champion Damon Hill paid tribute to Max Verstapen’s 17th win of the season, but added that racing would have been more interesting if the reigning world champion had had real competition on track.
Damon Hill: “I think even Max’s Dutch fans would like to see him win. Of course Red Bull achieved incredible results, but I don’t remember Max being in action very often during the Sao Paulo race, doing lap after lap.
There were also races in my career that I won by an enviable margin. They always said to me after them, “Great performance!”, and I wanted to respond, “Honestly, it wasn’t that hard.” It’s just that at such moments everything went in my favor, and all I had to do was not make any mistakes.
What we like most about sports is catching up. For example, how Hamilton’s Lewis overtook Sergio Perez on the outside radius on the first lap. It was a bold move, but moments like these are what we live for.”
