The Sao Paulo Grand Prix ended for George Russell with a retirement due to overheating of the power plant. This engine can no longer be used, meaning the Mercedes driver’s car will have a different power plant for the final two stages of the season in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi.
No penalties are expected for the replacement, as the team wants to provide Russell with an engine that was already used earlier this season.
“For the next two races, George’s car will have different power sources, but that was the plan from the start,” said the team’s chief race engineer, Riccardo Musconi. – The race at Interlagos would be the last for its previous power plant. Why did we decide to remove him from the race?
We saw some alarming signals on the telemetry regarding pressure and temperature. At some point it became clear that the engine was going to fail. To prevent fire and damage to other elements of the car, a logical decision was made to withdraw the car from the race.
“George will have a different power unit for the last two races, so from that point of view there should be no problems.”
