The contract for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza expires next year, but in order to continue racing on the classic circuit in the future, a number of renovation works will have to be carried out to bring it up to modern standards. This was announced by Angelo Sticchi Damiani, president of the Italian national car club ACI, in an interview with Gazzetta della Sport, noting that this work should be completed before next year’s race.
But at the same time, negotiations continue with Liberty Media to extend the contract for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola until 2030. If this process is successfully completed, Italy will retain two Formula 1 races in the next five years.
“We would like to sign a preliminary agreement before the end of 2024,” Damiani said. – With Imola the situation is clearer, as the Emilia-Romagna region, local authorities and race promoters are already completing the reconstruction of the circuit, including the construction of a roof in the paddock, as well as the renovation of the Paddock Club.
In the case of Monza, there are restrictions related to the fact that the circuit is located in a green zone, so first of all it is necessary to renew the agreement with the Parco di Monza Consortium, since the current agreement expires in 2028.
The plan to modernize the Monza circuit includes the construction of new underground passages, as the existing ones are too narrow and hinder the flow of traffic and pedestrians. New access roads also need to be constructed.
The track surface will be completely replaced using the most modern materials, new curbs will be placed and safety zones will be redesigned. We expect the contractors to start work early next year and everything will be ready in June, well before the Grand Prix date.”
