Former Formula 1 driver, Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) President Alex Wurz called on the FIA to take additional safety measures following Guanyu Zhou’s accident at Silverstone.
Wurz first wrote a letter to the federation, which was then addressed via social networks, urging the FIA president to “check your mailbox”.
Wurz refers to the experience of 1999, when after Pedro-Paulo Dinitz’s accident at the European Grand Prix, Sauber’s car capsized following a contract with Wurz’s Benetton and the rear rollbar also collapsed. After that incident, the FIA has taken immediate action by tightening up the strength tests of this element.
Alex Wurz: “As far as I remember, the last time the rear rollbar broke in Formula 1 was when Pedro Dinitz jumped over a car at the Nürburgring ’99.
Then the GPDA demanded stricter crash tests, which were quickly passed by the FIA. Dear Mr. President, check your inbox, we have a job to do.”
Alfa Romeo chief race engineer Hevi Pujolar said the team has launched an internal investigation into the cause of the rear roll bar malfunction.
