This coming weekend the new city circuit will host the Las Vegas Grand Prix for the first time and this will be the third Formula 1 race in the United States in 2023. For many reasons, it is attracting increasing attention from the public and the press and promises to be a very exciting event.
However, Bernie Ecclestone, the former head of the World Cup board, has a different opinion.
“I’m actually looking forward to it without any interest. Why? Because it has nothing to do with Formula 1,” NOS quotes Ecclestone, who recently celebrated his 93rd birthday.
More than forty years ago, in the early 1980s, Formula 1 races were already held in Las Vegas, and Ecclestone himself was involved in organizing them, but that project cannot be called successful. The temporary Grand Prix track, which bore the name of the Caesars Palace hotel and casino, was constructed in the parking lot, where there was obviously not enough space to organize a full-fledged city circuit.
Due to the unfortunate configuration of the track and the heat that accompanied the 1981 and 1982 races, neither the racers nor the fans liked the Las Vegas stage. But now Liberty Media Corporation is acting very differently: it itself acted as a promoter of this phase and invested hundreds of millions in its organization.
But regardless of Ecclestone’s attitude to the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which clearly emphasizes elements of the American-style show, he is happy to see Formula 1’s geography expanding, having once done much of that himself . .
“I am pleased that the popularity of the championship continues to grow around the world. I was the person who took Formula 1 outside Europe and introduced it to the rest of the world. We are hosting the World Cup, not the European Championship, and it is good that this continues,” said Ecclestone.
The fact that Formula 1 races take place in the Middle East, China and Singapore is really up to Bernie Ecclestone, who left his post at the beginning of 2017 when the commercial rights of the world championship were taken over by the American company Liberty Media.
