Several Formula 1 champions risk prison time for racist remarks against Hamilton

Three-time Formula 1 champion Nelson Piquet likely to be the subject of litigation over his recent remarks about a Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton .

In November 2021, the 69-year-old Brazilian, during an analysis of an episode of the British Grand Prix race and an accident in the first part of the distance, called Hamilton a “neguinho”, which is considered a racist discriminatory word.

Now, in the runner’s homeland, three deputies have filed complaints with the court in Brasilia. According to professional lawyer Renan Gandolfi, Pique faces up to three years in prison.

“Racism must be fought everywhere. Treating black people in a clearly pejorative way, as Pique did, undermines equality,” said Taliria Petrone Lance, a parliamentarian from Rio de Janeiro, quoting one of the petitioners.
