George Russell said Mercedes understands the reasons for the lack of speed problems this year. The team looks forward to the next season with cautious optimism, because they know what needs to be done to fight for better results.
George Russell: “Lewis and I have different riding styles, but the fundamental limitations we face are the same. Every weekend he and I choose who will be the first to share his impressions during post-session briefings, and it turns out the second says the same thing as the first. This is a good sign because it shows that my partner and I are in the same situation and that the problems are clear to the team.
We look forward to next year with cautious optimism. The team is not confronted with the question “Why are we slow?” We know why we lack speed and we want to solve many problems. This gives us hope that if we solve them, we will take a big step forward. But a lot still needs to be done to achieve this.”
Speaking about Mercedes’ chances at the Las Vegas round, George Russell said: “In some ways we are facing a race into the unknown. Pirelli tires also pose challenges under optimal conditions. The rubber is designed to operate in a temperature range of +30C to +60C degrees, and in Las Vegas the temperature will likely range from +10C to +15C. Twice as cold as the tires need.
In qualifying it will be difficult to bring them within range, and in the race the rubber will be prone to granulation. But maybe we’re in for a weekend full of opportunities. On the other hand, who knows, maybe there will be no problems with the tires and the balance of power will be the same as in previous races.”
