Reigning world champion Max Verstappen criticized the 30-minute opening ceremony of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, saying it made the drivers look like clowns. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc disagrees, confident that sport and show coexist organically in Formula 1.
Charles Leclerc: “I think there is room for both sport and show in Formula 1. We already saw a big show this weekend during the opening ceremony. But we must not forget that although we have an excellent sport, we need to attract new viewers. I hope that the battle on the track, which is important in itself, important for me and for Max, will be no less interesting.
Some may be more attracted to the events surrounding the race weekend, but those people will then see the race and become fans for years to come.
I understand the approach of the initiators and it suits me. There’s no need to make every stage a show like this, but if we’re in Las Vegas, why not do it that way? But at the same time it is important not to forget and protect the essence of sport.”
