The start of the new season was quite difficult for Daniel Ricciardo and for the McLaren team in general, and it was only in Australia that things started to improve. Daniel regained confidence in the car, finishing sixth – less than half a second behind his team-mate Lando Norris.
Ricciardo hopes he will soon be so comfortable behind the wheel of the MCL36 car that fans will once again see in his performance the “signature” of late braking overtaking for which he has always been famous. In addition, new generation cars allow you to fight on the track in a more aggressive way.
Last year Daniel did not immediately adapt to the McLaren car, although he drove much more confidently in the second half of the season and even won the race at Monza.
When asked if he could be expected to surprise the public again with flashy overtakes, the Australian replied: “I think so. At least there are already signs of that.
I think part of the problem last year was Akebono’s brakes, but I also think that car’s overall performance kept me from braking very aggressively. This was probably due to a combination of factors: I couldn’t really feel the car for a long time because of its aerodynamics. But I’m sure everything will be fine now.”
However, McLaren engineers have yet to figure out why the new car lacks downforce in slow corners, which is what Ricciardo hates the most.
“The lower the speed, the worse the grip. At high speeds, the car holds the track better,” he said. – This means that we have a little more difficulty on narrow winding roads. The steering feel is less comfortable.”
