In an interview with PA, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff spoke about his future and his desire to help Hamilton win an eighth title…
Toto Wolff: “We live at such a pace that time flies very quickly. You see how the balance of power changes. We’ve won the Constructors’ Championship eight times in a row, and now Red Bull has won it for two years. But we have to look ahead and draw conclusions, now the task is to ensure that Lewis can win races again. My personal goal is to help him win the eighth title he should have won.
As team leader I have to be honest and open with both riders. But we all really want things to go well in 2021.
We live from contract to contract. It’s important that we do what we think is right, and at the moment I personally believe that Lewis can perform for a long time.
He will be 39 in January, while Fernando Alonso is now 42 and in top form. If you take care of yourself, prepare yourself physically and mentally, make progress in various areas, everything will be fine. We just have to give him a car that’s fast enough. I don’t doubt Lewis’ racing ability, but without a decent car he won’t be able to win.
The obvious goal is to create a structure for the future, this is my area of responsibility. Everything can happen. A stone could fall on your head. I don’t want to come to all 24 races in a few years, but only to 15. But there is still time for that. I’ve been playing this role for a long time. I can’t imagine doing anything else.
In 2020 it was difficult to decide whether I wanted to continue working out or return to the financial world. I was tired both mentally and physically, but then I realized that I wanted to continue. I feel like I contribute to the team at the intersection of finance and racing, and I have a passion for both, and that’s why I keep doing it.”
