Fernando Alonso: We are probably going to have a difficult weekend

Two weeks ago, Fernando Alonso stood on the podium in Sao Paulo after a long break. At an FIA press conference in Las Vegas on Thursday, the Aston Martin driver said this round and the season finale in Abu Dhabi will provide a clearer picture of the team’s competitiveness against its rivals.

Fernando Alonso: “The stage in Las Vegas is unlike any other. I think in the past when any of the racers came to this town they were on vacation. This time we came for the racing, so we are looking at the weekend seriously and from a professional point of view.

At the same time, I want to have fun this weekend. The fate of the individual title and the fate of the Constructors’ Championship have already been decided, so now everyone is trying to enjoy the last races of the season.

After three rounds in a row, two of which were sprints, it is good that this weekend we have the opportunity to work longer on training and have confidence in the car, which is necessary on the city circuit. I’m looking forward to the start of the weekend, but I don’t feel too much pressure.”

Asked whether third place at the Sao Paulo round proved Aston Martin had regained the speed it showed at the start of the season, Fernando said: “We need a few more races to understand that. The stages in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi are just as important for us as Sao Paulo when it comes to understanding the car.

The races in Austin and Mexico City were very painful, but were useful to understand the car and prepare for next year. Let’s see how everything turns out on this song. It will probably be a tough weekend, but I hope we can do well here and in Abu Dhabi.”
