Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff believes that Formula 1 does not deserve criticism for the failure of the drainage hatch.
Toto Wolff: “The failure of the discharge hatch is not a tragedy. It’s OK. Yes, the first training had to be completed ahead of schedule, but no one will remember that tomorrow.
There is no point in wasting time discussing a broken manhole cover. This has happened before. This is nonsense, this is only the first training. We must pay tribute to the people who organized this Grand Prix, who made our sport much bigger than before.
Liberty did a great job and we can’t complain just because the drain cover came loose during the first practice. Too bad that Carlos Sainz’s car was seriously damaged as a result. The situation was dangerous, so the FIA and track staff must ensure this does not happen again.”
