Vasseur: This should not happen in modern Formula 1

Frederic Vasseur, the head of the Scuderia, commented on the unexpected situation Ferrari found itself in due to the damage suffered by Carlos Sainz’s car at the start of the first training session.

Frédéric Vasseur: “Carlos’ car hit something on the track and he didn’t know what it was. It turned out that the monocoque was completely damaged, as well as the engine and battery, and I think this is simply unacceptable.

Now I can’t talk about other topics because what happened during the first training will cost us very dearly. Carlos will certainly not be able to participate in the second training session because we have to change the chassis of his Ferrari and essentially change two thirds of his car. This should not happen in modern Formula 1.

It was not easy for our team to reach Las Vegas, preparing for this race required a lot of effort, but what happened is alarming because it is very dangerous. I don’t want to go into details, such problems are not common and I don’t want to create unnecessary complications. But we have had similar incidents in the past, for example in Baku, Malaysia and Monaco. Let’s not forget that cars speed down the highway at speeds of over 300 km/h.

We are afraid that the end of the season is approaching: will we have enough spare parts? There may also be budgetary issues. Overall the situation is not ideal as the drivers need to get to know the new track, the team needs to gather information and as Carlos will miss the second practice this won’t help either.

But the situation is what it is, we should not complain, but concentrate on the work, try to deal with it as best as possible and prepare Carlos’ car for the third practice, and Charles Leclerc for the second, if at all happens. I don’t know this yet…’
