On the first day, or rather, the first night of work at the Las Vegas circuit, McLaren failed to find the right approach, mainly due to rubber granulation issues. However, Lando Norris admitted that they had previously had problems on circuits that required little downforce.
Lando Norris (10th): “It’s a tough day, it wasn’t easy for us. The track is difficult, the grip is low, because of this the tires lose efficiency very quickly – this is exactly what happened to us.
Overall, not my best day, because I feel uncomfortable behind the wheel, although that’s not the point, it’s that I couldn’t find the optimal balance, achieve stability, etc. In general, the start of the weekend not the best.
As we added more fuel and started doing a long series of laps, the feeling got even worse, so it’s not going as well as the weekend before. But overall we were probably prepared to be at about the same level as at Monza or other circuits that require little downforce.
Overall we still have problems, but I am confident that we can make improvements tomorrow, and I already know what we need to work on.”
Oscar Piastri (14th): “The track is very slippery and the difficulties are due to the fact that the surface is quite uneven, but the training was interesting. Finding the right approach to the tires was tricky due to the increased granulation, and this will need to be resolved in preparation for tomorrow.
The worst was when we were on soft tires, but overall the picture is not entirely clear as some had problems due to granulation, others did not. Let’s see what we can do and hope that tomorrow will be more successful for everyone.
We seemed a little more competitive in the long series of laps, but we still couldn’t reach the level we wanted to reach. It seems like Ferrari has a lot of confidence at this track, but the overall picture is quite mixed.
First we need to get some sleep and tomorrow we will analyze the situation. But in any case, it is good that we were able to work on the track.”
