During the third practice session in Las Vegas, Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll overtook Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari during double yellow flags.
The stewards listened to the explanations of Stroll and his team representative, also examined all available information and came to the conclusion that when car No. 18 approached marshal station 12.9 in a straight line, yellow flags were already flying there and were clearly visible. Already after Stroll’s car passed this post, he was ahead of car No. 55, i.e. Sainz’s Ferrari.
Lance explained what happened by saying that at the time he was looking at the display on the steering wheel of the car, and also looking at the Ferrari in front of him and did not notice the flags. Although there was no yellow light on the display of Stroll’s Aston Martin, the rules state that flags on track mean the same, so the driver was given the standard penalty.
In addition, the Canadian not only loses five places at the start of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, but also receives three penalty points – now Lance Strohl has five.
