Max Verstappen qualified third in Las Vegas, but thanks to Carlos Sainz’s penalty he will start second from the front row. The Red Bull Racing driver did not hide the fact that the car lacked speed in one fast lap.
His teammate Sergio Perez performed much worse. The Mexican rider set the twelfth fastest time and did not qualify for the final.
Max Verstappen (3rd): “The asphalt is quite cold and slippery. On a city circuit you try to fly as close to the walls as possible, but that is not always easy enough
I liked the qualifying. I think we got the most out of the car today. We’ve had a lack of lap speed all weekend and that was quite evident today. I hope we will work effectively with the tires during the race and get back to winning ways.
Yesterday we looked good in the long series. Of course I would like the car to be faster today, but the points will be awarded tomorrow.
The race will not be easy. There may be a safety car on the track and the straight is very long, so there will be a lot of fighting.”
Sergio Perez (12th): “Unfortunately the track got us.” I went a little earlier than the others to try it, but this was the strategy from the start. We will discuss this situation within the team. In fact, I was already lucky in the first part when I was able to get into the second part. My team and I have a lot to analyze.
I think we will have a very interesting race tomorrow because a lot can happen. Let’s see what result we can achieve.”
