Fernando Alonso qualified tenth in Las Vegas, but thanks to Carlos Sainz’s penalty he will start ninth. His Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll set the 14th fastest time, but loses five positions at the start as he overtook Carlos Sainz under double yellow flags in the third practice session.
Fernando Alonso (10th): “I’m quite happy with reaching the final. Let’s see what result we can get if we start from ninth position.
I’m satisfied with both my laps in the final – I only lost five hundredths to seventh place, which indicates a high density of competition. Before the stage we knew that the circuit was not particularly suitable for our car, especially because of the high speeds on the straights.
The circuit itself is impressive – the organizers have done a great job. The only problem was the asphalt, which does not provide enough grip. You may want to think about this topic in the future. But it’s still fun to race in Vegas.”
Lance walk (14th): “Today I felt quite comfortable behind the wheel and was happy with my decisive lap in the second part, but we just didn’t have enough speed on the straight. With close results, this cost me access to the final.
It will be a tough race given my penalty, but we have a good pace in the corners and the car is taking good care of the tires. I’m going to try to make the best of it and enjoy the race in Las Vegas.”
