Not everything went well for the AlphaTauri team this weekend – they failed to find the right approach on the new city circuit in Las Vegas, and only Daniel Ricciardo qualified for the second part of qualifying, and Yuki Tsunoda was the very last .
Daniel Ricciardo (15th): “I think our team’s problems this weekend are due to the fact that we fail to get the necessary grip on the smooth asphalt of the new track – it’s just shiny and open during the day for regular traffic .
We made some important changes to the settings and made some progress, but today we could hardly move up the rankings. I’m happy that these improvements allowed me to qualify for the second part of qualifying, because we clearly had problems with the speed during one fast lap, as we couldn’t really get the tires working effectively.
I’m more optimistic about tomorrow because I think we can handle long series of laps better. I don’t know yet what to expect from the race, but I think the results will be very close.”
Yuki Tsunoda (20th): “There’s not much to say today, but we could have done better, but we didn’t get good results and that’s disappointing.
I tried my best, but it didn’t work. We know we lack speed on the straights and we expect we will have problems this weekend. We made some minor changes to the settings, but I wasn’t able to warm up the tires enough for the final attempt as I got stuck in traffic in the last sector. As a result, there was no normal traction and I locked the wheels.
The pace of the car is not that bad and you never know what could happen during the race because there is so little grip on this track. But I will try to avoid problems and do everything I can to regain as many positions as possible.”
