Red Bull driver Max Verstappen criticized the organization of the Formula One championship leg in Las Vegas, comparing the Grand Prix to a low-level football league.
— I think that (the Grand Prix) of Monaco is the Champions League, and this (Las Vegas) is the National League. I understand that the fans may also need to do something at the track, but I think it’s more important that you let them know what we are doing from a sporting point of view. Most of them just come to party, have a drink, watch a DJ or a show – I mean what can I do anywhere in the world I can go to Ibiza and get drunk.
But what happens is they come and become fans of what? They come to see their favorite artist, have a drink with friends and have a crazy evening, but they don’t really understand what we do and what we put at stake to succeed.
If you actually spent more time on the sport itself and what we’re really trying to accomplish… Drivers grow up aspiring to become world champions. If more attention was paid to these kinds of things and what the team does, these things would be much more important than all these random shows.
It’s not something I’m passionate about and I love the passion and emotion in places like this. I love Vegas, but not from the point of view of driving a Formula 1 car. There is no emotion or passion compared to the old school tracks,” Verstappen said according to ESPN.
The National League is the fifth highest division of English club football.
During qualifying for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the current world champion took third place and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc won. The race will take place on Sunday.
Las Vegas hosts the Formula 1 Grand Prix for the first time since 1982.
