Only one of the Haas drivers reached the finish of the race in Las Vegas: Kevin Magnussen in thirteenth place. His teammate Nico Hulkenberg retired due to problems with the Ferrari power source.
Kevin Magnussen (13th): “I feel that the level of tire degradation and the speed of the car allowed us to earn points, but we were unable to do so. We need to analyze the race and understand why it didn’t work out. I had pace the entire race, even at the end of the sections.
As the race progressed, the track conditions constantly changed, which also became part of the challenge. I enjoyed the race.”
Nico Hulkenberg (meeting): “Something happened and the engine lost power – we need to find out the reasons. We had a good pace, I had a good start, but an incident in the first corner forced me to go wide off the track, which led to a loss of position.
After that I felt comfortable behind the wheel. I think I could have gone faster if I hadn’t gotten stuck in traffic. In addition, we had to protect the tires from granulation, which made it impossible to attack as hard as we wanted. Anyway, it was one of the best races.”
Gunther Steiner, Team Principal: “Both drivers did everything they could today to get the most out of the car, and we stayed ahead of our usual rivals. We couldn’t get closer to the stronger teams because both our cars were stuck behind the Williams – they were too fast on the straights so we couldn’t overtake them.
Unfortunately something happened to the engine in Nico’s car and Kevin finished thirteenth. I don’t think we did anything wrong.”
